Synopsis
Born in the South of the US in the late 30’s, during the segregation, nowadays the sculptor Melvin Edwards is a worldwide recognized artist. As black internationalist, pan-Africanist, and one of the major Modernist innovators in the New York art scene from the days of Abstract Expressionism up until the current Conceptual wave, Melvin Edwards is one of the few African-America who has a particular strong connection with Africa beyond his African origins.
This film reveals how in Melvin Edwards’s work the global black initiative operates like a vital lifeline in his artistic expression and way of life; and how exploring different techniques of welding, and engaging his cultural and political values Edwards established along 5 decades his own artistic language.
